Fieldstone, boulder, block and timber on Leicester's hillsides
Drive the rural roads west of Asheville and you can read Leicester's building history in its walls. Old farm boundaries built from fieldstone pulled off the same ground they're holding, stacked dry and still standing because whoever laid them understood batter. Mid-century block walls set by homeowners who just needed a flat spot beside a gravel driveway. Modern boulder terraces on the cut banks of newer builds, where a track hoe pushed the slope back and somebody had to hold it. And pressure-treated timber, still at the top of people's lists because it's cheap, until it isn't.
Each material has a real job here. Fieldstone is beautiful and locally abundant but demands a dry-fit or mortar-trained hand — it doesn't forgive lazy batter, and it doesn't hide a bad line. Boulder walls handle saturated slope loads better than almost anything else per dollar. Block is fast, predictable, and code-friendly for engineered walls. Timber rots in our humidity faster than most owners expect. Matching the material to the slope, the budget, and the look is where a Leicester wall project either works or becomes a callback.
This matters more here than in flat country because so much of Leicester is hillside. If the answer is vague, the price is too. Third, who holds the liability if a wall taller than four feet fails — the mason, the engineer, or the homeowner? Get that answer in writing.
Then look at their finished work up close, not just photos. Run a hand along the wall face. A good boulder wall has stones keyed into each other with the long axis running back into the hill, and the batter leans in slightly as it rises. A good fieldstone wall has consistent coursing and no rattling caps. If a wall already has a belly or a lean in year one, it was built wrong and the water is already winning.
